What Does That Oil Light on Your Dash Really Mean?

Confused by your car’s oil light? Red vs orange, low pressure vs low level, and what “10% oil life” really means. Granville & Avery Automotive in Vancouver explains.

Hey Vancouver drivers! At Granville & Avery Automotive, we’re a small family-run shop right here in the city, and one of the most common phone calls we get is some version of: “My oil light just came on—what do I do??” Or “My car says 10% oil life remaining—am I out of oil??”

Let’s clear up the confusion once and for all.

The Two Different Oil Lights You Might See

Red Oil Can Light (sometimes flashing)

  • This is the serious one.
  • Means critically low oil pressure.
  • Your engine is not getting proper lubrication right now—metal-on-metal contact can happen in minutes and destroy the engine.
  • Action: Pull over immediately and shut the engine off. Check the dipstick. If low, top up. If full and the light is still on, do NOT restart—call for a tow.

Orange or Yellow Oil Can Light (usually steady)

  • This is the warning/ advisory light on many newer vehicles (VW/Audi, BMW, Mercedes, some Hondas, etc.).
  • Typically means the oil level is low (but pressure is still OK for now) or the system has detected the oil needs changing soon.
  • It’s the car’s polite way of saying “Hey, you’re about a litre low—top me up soon” or “Your oil is getting tired.”
  • Action: You can usually keep driving to a safe spot or home, but check and top up the oil within the next day or two and book a service.

Quick rule of thumb:Red = Stop nowYellow/Orange = Fix soon

The “XX% Oil Life Remaining” Message (still not the oil level!)

That percentage is still not how much oil is left in the engine—it’s how much useful life is left in the current oil.10% = almost time for an oil change. 0% = you’re overdue.

Does Oil Normally Disappear?

In a healthy engine, no. You should never have to top up between services. If you’re adding oil regularly, let us find the cause (burning past rings, slow leak, etc.).

Quick Summary

  • Red oil light → Low oil pressure → Stop driving immediately
  • Orange/yellow oil light → Usually low level or oil due → Fix soon, safe to drive short distance
  • “XX% oil life” → Time for an oil change, not an emergency
  • Oil shouldn’t disappear → We’ll spot any issues during your visit

Driving Vancouver’s hills and rainy weather is hard on oil. A 30-second dipstick check once a month (or let us do it) can save you a very expensive repair.

Next time a light pops on, you’ll know exactly what your car is trying to tell you—and we’re always here at 8865 Osler Street if you need a second opinion.
