Check Engine Light Diagnostics in Marpole, Vancouver

A check engine light tells you something is wrong. It doesn't tell you what. At Granville & Avery Automotive, our Red Seal technicians read the codes, track down the actual cause, and explain it to you in plain English before any repair starts.

We've been at 8865 Osler St in Marpole since 1988, and we're BCAA approved.

Warning Light

Flashing or steady?

  • Flashing: usually a serious misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration, and get it in as soon as you can. If the car is shaking, losing power or smells hot, pull over somewhere safe.
  • Steady: something is out of range, but it's usually not an emergency. Book a check soon, since waiting weeks can turn a small fix into a bigger one.

A red temperature or oil warning is a different light, and that's the one to stop for. Our check engine light guide and oil light guide go into more detail.

Codes vs Diagnosis

Why a code alone isn't a diagnosis

A free code read at a parts store gives you a code, like P0420 or P0301. That code points to a system, not always to a single failed part. The same code can come from a worn sensor, a vacuum leak, a wiring fault or a part that's genuinely failed. Replacing parts based on the code alone is how people end up paying for things they didn't need.

Diagnosis

What our diagnosis includes

  • Reading the stored codes and freeze-frame data from your car's computer with a professional scan tool
  • Checking the likely causes behind each code, not just the first part the code names
  • Testing and inspection of the related sensors, wiring and components as needed
  • A plain-English explanation of what we found: what needs attention now, what can wait, and what it would take to fix

You decide what we do next.

Diagnosis is a booked service. It usually starts with about an hour of shop time, and the final time depends on how complex the problem is and how long it takes to track down. We'll talk you through it before we go further.

Common Causes

Common causes we find

  • Loose or worn gas cap
  • Oxygen sensors
  • Spark plugs or ignition coils
  • Catalytic converter problems, often after a misfire was left too long
  • Mass airflow sensor
  • Thermostat or coolant temperature problems
  • Evaporative (EVAP) system leaks

Before you bring it in

  • Check that the gas cap is tight.
  • Note what you've noticed: rough running, noises, smells, or when the light came on.
  • Don't clear the code with a cheap scanner first. The stored information helps us find the cause faster.

Why Choose Us

European cars, EVs and Teslas

We diagnose most everyday makes and models, including many European cars (not exotics or very high-end models). On Teslas we generally do tires, brakes and suspension, so please call and ask about anything else. If we can't do it, we likely know someone who does.

Why drivers in Marpole and South Vancouver choose us

  • BCAA approved, with Red Seal technicians
  • At 8865 Osler St since 1988
  • Clear explanations with no scare tactics. We tell you what's urgent and what can wait
  • Easy to reach from Kerrisdale, Oakridge and South Granville

Check Engine FAQs

Check engine light FAQ

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

If it's steady and the car drives normally, usually yes for a short while, but book a check soon. If it's flashing, ease off and get it in as soon as you can. If the car is shaking or losing power, pull over somewhere safe.

Will the light go off on its own?

Sometimes. A loose gas cap can clear after a few drives once it's tightened. If the light comes back or stays on, the problem is still there.

Isn't a free code read enough?

A code tells us which system to look at, not always which part has failed. Diagnosis is the work of confirming the cause before anything gets replaced.

How long does a diagnosis take?

It usually starts with about an hour of shop time. Some problems take longer to track down, and we'll talk to you before going further.

Do you diagnose European cars?

Yes, most of them, though not exotics or very high-end models. Call to ask about yours.

Can I book online?

Yes. Book online or call 604-266-7610, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
