Brake Warning Signs

Signs your brakes need a look

  • A high-pitched squeal when you brake. Many pads have a small metal wear tab that squeals when the pads get thin. Book a check soon. (A squeal on a damp Vancouver morning that fades after a few stops is often just surface rust on the rotors, and that's normal.)
  • Grinding. The pad material is usually gone and metal is touching the rotor. Book right away and drive gently until then.
  • The car pulls to one side when you brake. Often a sticking caliper or uneven pad wear.
  • A pulsing or vibrating pedal. Usually rotors that have worn unevenly.
  • A soft or sinking pedal, or a red brake warning light. Stop and get it checked before you drive further.
  • Clicking or rattling. Loose hardware or a shifted pad. Not always urgent, but worth a look.

Not sure which one you're hearing? Our post on squealing vs grinding brakes walks through it.

Brake Checks

Free brake checks with tire service

A free brake check comes with every tire rotation and every tire swap, whether your tires are on rims or off. With Vancouver's twice-a-year swap to and from winter tires, that's an easy way to keep an eye on pad wear without a separate visit.

EVs & European Cars

Brakes on EVs, Teslas and European cars

We do brakes on most everyday makes and models, including many EVs and Teslas. Brakes are part of the general work we do on Teslas, along with tires and suspension (read more in Tesla repairs at our Marpole shop). Drive unit, battery and computer work goes to Tesla.

We also service European cars, though not exotics or very high-end models. Not sure about yours? Always call to ask. We want to help where we can.

What We Check

What our brake service covers

When your car comes in for brakes, we look at the full system, not just the pads:

  • Brake pads: thickness and wear pattern on every wheel
  • Rotors: wear, scoring and warping, and whether they can stay or need replacing
  • Calipers and slide pins: sticking or seized parts that cause pulling and uneven wear
  • Hardware: clips, shims and anything that rattles or squeals
  • Brake fluid and lines: fluid condition, leaks and hose condition
  • Parking brake: that it holds and adjusts properly

Then we explain what we found, show you if you'd like to see it, and give you the options before any work starts.

Brake FAQs

Brake repair FAQ

How do I know if I need new brake pads?

The most common signs are a squeal when braking, a longer stopping distance, or a brake warning light. The surest way is to have the pads measured. We check them for free with every tire rotation and tire swap.

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

Grinding usually means metal on metal. Book a check right away and drive gently until then. The longer it goes on, the more likely the rotors will need replacing along with the pads.

Do I always need new rotors with new pads?

No. We measure the rotors and only recommend replacing them if they're worn past spec, scored or warped. If they can stay, we'll tell you.

Why do my brakes squeal on wet mornings?

Overnight dampness puts a light layer of rust on the rotors. It usually wipes off after a few stops. If the noise stays, or you hear it every time you brake, book a check.

Do you do brakes on Teslas and other EVs?

Yes. Brakes are part of the general service we do on many EVs and Teslas. Call to confirm for your model.

Can I book online?

Yes. Book online or call us at 604-266-7610, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
